ABOUT
Tucson Jazz Institute

Tucson Jazz Institue Ellington Band, directed by John Black, returns to SaddleBrooke's DesertView Performing Arts Center to energize the community with their swingin' big band sounds and impress with their new bandstand fronts!

AWARD-WINNING STUDENT MUSICIANS
This nationally recognized, award-winning high school big band just returned from Monterey, California, where they placed 3rd in the Next Generation Jazz Festival (produced by Monterey Jazz Festival). And the TJI Concord Combo (small ensemble), comprised of students from this big band, won 1st Place under the direction of TJI co-owner Brice Winston. They will be performing in September at the Monterey Jazz Festival - an opportunity that comes with the WIN!

THEY REALLY DO SWING!
The band's ability to swing and demonstrate exceptional talent -- as a band and as soloists -- has gained the school a national reputation for being one of the best jazz music schools in the country. The school and individual students have won numerous DownBeat Magazine awards, and they have won FIVE FIRST PLACE AWARDS in the prestigious Essentially Ellington competition held in NYC (Jazz at Lincoln Center), and have always placed in the top three in their EIGHT invitations to compete. Tucson, since TJI's first competition in EE in 2010 on a 'national stage,' has become the hot spot for JAZZ in the SW!

THE SCHOOL & UPCOMING SPRING BIG BAND BASH
TJI teaches middle school students on Saturdays and high school students on Sundays at Utterback Middle School (north of I10 & Kino) and they are recruiting now for their summer program. To learn more, purchase CDS, and purchase tickets for their Spring Big Band Bash on Sunday, May 19, 2 pm at the Berger Performing Arts Center, visit their website www.tucsonjazzinstitute.com.

THE STUDENTS
Over 90% of their graduates get substantial college scholarships. Their alumni attend some of the most prestigious schools in the nation including Juilliard, the Manhattan School of Music, The New England Conservatory, Princeton, USC and Swarthmore (many on scholarship) and have gone on to major careers in jazz music.

SUPPORT: SCHOLARSHIPS | SPONSORSHIP | GUEST ARTISTS
Students of the school in need of financial assistance - tuition & travel - are supported by the Tucson Jazz Music Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Arizona's youth. The FDN will be at this event and is thanking the audience in advance for their continued generosity and loyal attendance.
