In this talk, we will discuss two projects aimed at preventing and curing diseases using knowledge extracted from the Internet. First, we will show how computers can learn whether a community is at risk for specific health problems – i.e., obesity or diabetes – by observing what its member's post and tweet on the internet about food. There is hope that this approach will lead to early, automated prevention methods that will minimize patient-doctor visits. Then, we will discuss a project that teaches computers to “read” millions of cancer-research articles to gain an understanding of the disease.
