Tucson Jazz Institute

Twice a year we get to be entertained by the Tucson Jazz Institute headed up by Doug Tidaback. We also have an opportunity to provide some financial assistance at that same time. The evening in April is always an interesting evening, due to the fact that a decision has always been made by this time whether or not to include our own Tucson Jazz Institute in the final jazz competition in New York at Lincoln Center. To put it in perspective, only 15 bands are selected for this competition out of over 3 thousand bands that have auditioned. By the time this performance is on our stage, the Tucson Jazz Institute picked, practiced and perfected their music selections for the competition. During this performance, we get to hear their competitive selections and even get to provide input as to audience acceptance. What a thrill this is for the patrons of the Desert View Performing Arts Theater and one that is important to the jazz band. This particular show had the Tucson Jazz Institute short $3,000.00 for their hotel bill which was picked up by a donation from a couple of SaddleBrooke residents. If you like jazz, you loved this show. These kids (some as young as 6th grade all the way through 12th grade,) are all good musicians in their own right and some had already been selected for college scholarships. The performance ended with a surprise from the band leaving the stage and marching around the isles circling the audience and ending up in front of the stage. They even had at least 3 encores to an evening of excellent jazz. Plus, who knew Doug could sing. Great job, Tucson Jazz Institute Ellington Band, and we wish you well in New York.
